Rügen - winter 2024
End of November 2024 Ad Hulshoff and myself travelled to Rügen to chase pike on the fly. Wading the flats of the 'bodden' is simply the coolest fly fishing for pike we have within 8 hours driving from home.
Speaking to Bernd we soon learned that the pike fishing had been slow this season. But Bernd's knowledge of Rügen still made it possible to be succesfull. No big numbers of pike but some really nice fish were landed on the fly.
Air temperatures had been going up from -4 to 13 Celcius in a week and we also experienced rising water, meaning higher saltlevels, and that meant the pike were not really eating.
We still found pike in all the spots we fished and some nice ones too!
First two days we fished on our own. Some old spots and some new (thanks Bernd!). Last day we were out with Bernd and two other pike chasers. The fishing was extremely tough but we all found some action. Late in the day Ad hooked into a big pike and then just before sunset Bernd hooked into a huge fat pike. Sharing moments like that make for great adventures!

- take a good stripping basket
- strip fast and fish on the hang
- use small black goby streamers (10 to 12cm)
